A starship, also known as a starcruiser, is a vessel designed for interstellar travel, specifically between star systems.
Starships are commonly powered by ion engines, the most common form of sublight drives, and many, usually the larger vessels, are equipped with hyperdrive generators, used to reach hyperspace as lightspeed isn't fast enough. Light-years would take years to travel across using sublight drives. Across the galaxy, many starships are armed, usually with laser cannons. Capital ships often feature turbolaser emplacements or missile launchers, and some feature hangar bays that can carry starfighters. Weapons help defend against star pirates and military forces. Deflector shields counter the effects of laser weaponry, protecting the starship from attack. Once these shields fall, the captain usually surrenders to their attackers.
Ship classes:
-
Scout
A scout ship is a lightly armed vessel, very small and usually made purely for speed and maneouverability.
-
Attack fighter
An attack fighter (fighter, or attack ship) is a relatively small, maneuverable, and heavily armed starship. It's primarily used to carry out assaults that larger vessels cannot perform
-
Battleship
Battleships are a type of large and powerful warship. They are the most powerfully armed and most heavily armored warships of the era.
-
Cruisers:
Cruisers are a type of starship that serve as the primary combat vessels in a fleet.
Attack cruiser
The attack cruisers favor weapons over armor. They are usually at the head of any attacking force.
Battle cruiser
Battle cruisers are the opposites of the attack cruisers. They favor heavier armor over heavier artillery.
Heavy cruiser
These cruisers are like a mix of the attack cruiser and the battle cruiser. With heavy armor and heavy artillery, they are formidable opponents, a force to be feared.
Light cruiser
Light cruisers are the opposite of heavy cruisers. Using lighter armor and lighter artillery, these cruisers favor speed and maneouverability.
-
Dreadnought
Dreadnought is a designation used to describe a type of starship that is usually built solely for combat, with the best weapons and the strongest defences.
-
Destroyer
A destroyer is a type of military starship intended to escort vessels in a fleet and defend them from attack, giving this type of vessel similarities with escort ships. Destroyers can be further classified as heavy destroyers.
-
Escort
In starship classification, an escort is designated as being a small starship which is generally given a protection role, moving with less maneuverable ships or vessels with lighter armament. Escorts can further be classified as fast escorts, heavy escorts or battle escorts. Light escorts are also called corvettes.
-
Explorer
The term explorer, or exploration cruiser, is a starship classification that is applied to multi-purpose starships that are equipped to perform a variety of duties at the same time. Explorers are similar to heavy cruisers, as they are equipped with strong defenses, and are designed to perform long-duration and long-range missions. During wars, explorers are used as flagships for battle groups and fleets of ships. Explorers are the second largest ships in the Federation fleet.
-
Frigate
A frigate is a starship classification applied to the smallest starships fielded by a galactic state. Frigates are designed to be fast and protect larger vessels while conducting general service missions. Frigates can be further typified as support frigates, fast frigates, light frigates and heavy frigates.
-
Interceptor
An interceptor was a type of high-speed atmospheric jet-aircraft specifically designed to intercept and destroy invading enemy aircrafts.
-
Freighter
Freighters, or cargo ships, are designations given to starships and vehicles that are assigned to ferry goods, materials and substances from one location to another.
Freighters carry cargo inside their own hulls, in designated spaces called cargo holds or cargo bays. Larger vessels of these classifications are more likely to carry cargo in the form of bulk goods and sealed, standardized containers. In many designs, cargo containers can be docked externally to the main hull, to be undocked and exchanged at each port.
These ships sometimes have some capacity for carrying passengers, although the quality of accomodations can vary widely.
-
Transport
A transport is a designation given to starships and vehicles that are used to ferry people from place to place, these vessels range from civilian commercial transportation to military personnel transports. Transports differ from freighters in that they are designed to accommodate people rather than exclusively cargo.
